What is The Variability Wheel and How Do I Use It?

The Variability Wheel is an assessment tool that measures the core elements of an effective online course.
Grounded in the Universal Design for Learning framework, the 9 elements are:
Engagement
- Voice & Choice
- Maintaining Momentum
- Emotional Regulation
Action & Expression
- Accessibility
- Knowledge Expression
- Executive Functions
Representation
- Content Diversification
- Vocabulary
- Knowledge Connections
Engagement
Engagement refers to the level of involvement, attention, and interest shown by students in the learning process, through their participation and interaction with the course content, instructors, and other participants. The goal of engagement is to create a meaningful and active learning experience that promotes critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and the development of knowledge.

Action & Expression
Action & expression refer to the ways in which students demonstrate their understanding of the course material and apply what they have learned to real-world situations.
Action refers to the hands-on application of knowledge, skills, and understanding, such as completing assignments, participating in virtual simulations, or completing projects.
Expression refers to the communication and presentation of learning, such as writing essays, creating videos or podcasts, or participating in discussions and debates. These activities allow participants to demonstrate their critical thinking skills, creativity, and their ability to effectively communicate their ideas.
In both cases, action & expression play a crucial role in online learning as they promote active and engaged learning, encourage students to apply what they have learned, and provide opportunities for them to receive feedback and refine their understanding of the subject.

Representation
Representation refers to the various forms of media and technologies used to present and deliver course content to students. This can include text, images, videos, audio recordings, animations, simulations, and interactive activities, among others. Representation in online learning serves as a tool for instructors to convey information, engage students in learning activities, and provide opportunities for students to demonstrate their understanding and mastery of the subject matter.
Effective representation in online learning should be interactive, visually appealing, and accessible to a wide range of learners. It should also align with instructional goals and support different learning styles and preferences. The use of various forms of representation can enhance the overall quality of the learning experience and improve student engagement, motivation, and achievement.
